The Winnipeg Chapter for the National Committee for UN Women - Canada

The Winnipeg Chapter is a group of volunteers who, since 2002, have worked to raise the awareness and to educate ourselves and others about the many challenges and achievements of women today. The work of UN Women is impressive - an organization that brings together all the agencies working for women at the UN. UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. The United Nations made history January 1, 2011, as UN Women officially began its work. This ambitious new organization consolidates and scales up UN actions to achieve gender equality, offering the promise of accelerated progress in realizing the rights of women worldwide.

Mary Scott, Chair, Winnipeg Chapter, received the Babs Friesen Life Time Achievement Award at the YM-YWCA Women of Distinction Dinner May 2nd, 2012.

Local to Global 2012 -
The Impact of War and Peace on Women: Through the Eyes of a Journalist

Special thanks to our media sponsor, The Winnipeg Free Press.

Funds raised to support UN Women (Women, War and Peace Program).

April 11,2012. A sell out crowd of over 200 people came to hear Associated Press International Correspondent, Kathy Gannon speak to us about her experiences covering many parts of the world, most recently Afghanistan and Pakistan.

She spoke about what it is like, being a woman and a journalist to cover the world's hot spots. Her pictures gave a graphic account of the affects of war. BR> Kathy Gannon, the Associated Press award-winning reporter in Afghanistan is now based in Pakistan, was honoured with a rare National Newspapers Award in 2011.
Kathy, a Canadian who hails from Timmins, Ontario, has worked for AP since 1988 in Pakistan and Afghanistan, a period that spans the mysterious death of Pakistan dictator Zia-ul Haq, the withdrawal of Russian soldiers from Afghanistan, and the bitter Afghan civil war between Islamic factions. She was in Kabul when the Taliban regime took power and was the only western journalist allowed to return to Kabul by the Taliban in the weeks before their collapse in November 2001.
It was approporiate for Margo Goodhand, Editor of the Winnipeg Free Press to introduce Kathy. She has received two AP Managing Editors awards for her coverage of two of the hottest spots on the planet Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ms. Gannon was the 2002 recipient of the International Women's Media Foundation's Courage in Journalism award.

There was special entertainment - Keri Latimer performed, including a song written from her kitchen table - about how one person can make a dfference. Keri is a Canadian Juno Award winner, and has been singing with the acclaimed band Nathan. She has just released a CD - which were available for purchase, with $5.00 coming to support the Winnipeg Chapter and the Local to Global event.

Sierra Noble ended our evening, with an outstanding performance, including the fiddle, playing guitar, and singing. Sierra has just recently been annunced as the recipient of the Red Cross Youth Humanitarian Award for 2012! We were very fortunate that Sierra agreed to be part of the program - Sierra Noble has been one of Winnipeg, Manitoba's most promising young talents since releasing her first instrumental album at age 14. Well known for most of her life as a fiddle virtuoso who breezes through numerous styles of music with stunning ease, Sierra's breadth of experience in music and in life at 21 is impressive. Sierra too had her CD avaiable for purchase and $5.00 was donated back to the Winnipeg Chapter for tonight's event.

Food was a special highlight of the evening - a sparking punch, dainties, and finger foods, but the best was the Bolani's, made and donated by the Afghan-Canadian Women's Organization.
There is international recognition that women bear the brunt of modern conflicts, including where rape is a weapon of war. Specific threats to women must be identified and stopped, and women must be at the centre of peace talks and post-conflict reconstruction.

Our thanks to all those that made this event possible, the volunteers, and the many generous sponsors and individuals
